DEKRA Assurance Services will conduct research on behalf of Bielefeld University
DEKRA to undertake climate study on UEFA EURO 2024
DEKRA has been tasked with carrying out an ex-post climate study on UEFA EURO 2024, which will include assessing the environmental impact in the ten host cities. The work has been commissioned by Bielefeld University, which is conducting an evaluation study on EURO 2024 for the German Federal Ministry of the Interior and Community (BMI). As part of the project, DEKRA Assurance Services’ sustainability experts will be determining the carbon footprint of the European international men’s soccer championships as well as other sustainability key performance indicators.
Last summer, the BMI contracted Bielefeld University and German Sport University Cologne to carry out a joint project: the EURO 2024 Evaluation Study. Led by professors Pamela Wicker and Christoph Breuer, the project will be evaluating the social, economic, and environmental sustainability of the competition, which will run from June 14 to July 14 in Germany. The study will include efforts to investigate and collect data on a number of factors to capture various aspects of sustainability before and after the tournament.
The key objectives of DEKRA’s ex-post climate study are:
- To prepare an ex-post climate impact assessment for EURO 2024, factoring in the results of the ex-ante climate study by the Öko-Institut
- To evaluate options to prevent emissions outright
- To map out and independently categorize responsibility with regard to the climate
- To implement an environmental impact analysis at host city level
The environmental impact analysis will be informed by the Berliner Stadtrendite model (added value for the city beyond financial gain, as used in Berlin), and the factors to be investigated include climate action, mobility/transportation, and waste. The entire research project is being funded by the BMI and falls under the German government’s wide-ranging action plan around EURO 2024.
